Many people have different beliefs about the strange tunnels that ran underneath El Paso. Some believe they were created for drainage or Chinese opium dens. Others believe it was for illegal immigration. The beginning of the Chinese Exclusion Act was also the beginning of Chinese immigrants sneaking into El Paso through Juarez, Mexico. Eventually, the illegal immigration lead to the beginning of the border patrol.
The tunnels were underneath the Rio Grande and stretched from El Paso to Juarez. But that's just a theory. Some people think the tunnels couldn’t go from Mexico to America because someone would've had to dig underneath a river. Nobody knows for sure how or why the tunnels were created. Tunnels underneath some homes in El Paso, such as the Turtle House, have been said to have no end. Even today, the tunnels are still a mystery.
